Econometrics Training Service
How is the training provided?
Cambridge Econometrics offers four standard econometrics training courses,
based around the two econometrics software, EViews and Microfit:
- Introductory Econometrics
- Evaluating Econometric Modelling
- Working with Microfit, a three-day course in econometric techniques
- On-Line Introductory Econometrics
- Econometrics Training Courses using EViews
(1) Introductory Econometrics
- The course can be conducted at the client's offices, allowing certain sessions to be tailored to meet specific needs, or at Cambridge Econometrics if preferred.
- Clients use their own version of Microfit/EViews, making use of the package's easy-to-learn menu system to understand the basic concepts, ranging from OLS techniques and spurious regressions to ARIMA specification, testing and cointegration.
- The emphasis is on hands-on sessions, with each afternoon set aside for practical applications of the topics covered during the morning sessions.
- Participants are able to make use of their own data sets, enabling them to apply the knowledge gained in the technical sessions directly to their own work.

(2) Evaluating Econometric Modelling
- The three-day course can be conducted either at a client's offices or at Cambridge Econometrics if preferred.
- Use will be made of the Microfit/EViews package to demonstrate latest econometric techniques and how they can be used to assess model robustness.
- Theoretical sessions will include explaining the purpose of a model review and the underlying principles behind it, for example what makes for a good model, cost effectiveness, use of up-to-date econometric techniques.
- Practical application of the techniques to real-world examples play a large part in the course.
- Clients are encouraged to make use of their own examples to maximise the benefit gained.
Suggested Course Outline
(3) Working with Microfit, a three-day course in econometric techniques
- This three-day course is held once a year in Cambridge.
- Participants can choose to attend any combination of the three days.
- The course is normally led by the authors of the package, Hashem and Bahram Pesaran. Prof Hashem Pesaran ranks among the world's leading econometricians.
- Participants use Microfit in a mixture of classroom style discussion and structured hands-on sessions.
- A special attraction is the course dinner, which has a high profile guest speaker - past speakers have included Clive Granger, Martin Weale, Ken Wallis, and Stephen Hall.
Course Programme
(4) On-Line Introductory Econometrics
The training is provided in the form of pdf files which are downloaded by the participant prior to the course period. The following sub-sections cover areas where the presentation differs from a face-to-face course:
- Course folders and accompanying notes
In a face-to-face course the folders are designed to be completed as the course teacher proceeds with the session. For remote presentation, these folders include the course teacher's notes to provide sufficient detail to allow the participant to understand the concepts from the text alone. - Class examples
These are provided as pdf files with additional notes showing key concepts and explaining which techniques are being developed, with appropriate references to the Microfit package when specific directions are needed. - Hands-on sessions
The questions are supplied as pdf files together with model answers. - Access to course teacher
The course relies on use of email and telephone. The duration of the course is flexible, and would be agreed at the start between the teacher and participant. We suggest a maximum two-week completion period. A secondary contact is provided to cover periods when the principal course teacher is not available. - PC requirements
For the course to run effectively, the participant's PC must have internet access, and have Adobe acrobat reader and the appropriate software installed on it.

Bespoke Courses
Cambridge Econometrics also undertakes bespoke training courses where the topics covered and/or data to be analysed do not fit particularly well into any of the standard course programmes.
